(GuangZhou, China; hard; WTA Tier III)

Vera Zvonarëva, Maria Kirilenko and many other players all glammed up: (select "Guangzhou")

More off-court photos:

First round

- VERA ZVONARËVA [1] lt. Li,Ting, 6-3 7-5

This was Bepa's first match back after the left-ankle sprain that she sustained in a doubles match at San Diego, which forced her to miss the US Open.

Second set: Bepa 3-0 -> 3-4 -> 5-4 -> 5-7

Under normal circumstances this would be a very bad loss for Bepa, being "completely outplayed" [Teletext] against the world #157. But this is the first major post-injury situation of Bepa's career, so we can't expect instant success. I'm just relieved not to see a withdrawal or a retirement here.

Let's just hope that this match was for dusting off the cobwebs and that she goes well in Japan

Youīre right, Nick, even if she said her ankle isnīt 100% o.k. by now and itīs her first tournament after that long break it still is disappointing, so I just hope that she was able to get a good match practise at least out of this and that she will be able to show a better performance in Japan.

I know Vera was 3/0 up in the 2nd and also 5/4 up serving for the set so thats abit disappointing!! :(

:( Poor Vera!

All I know about it is there was a rain delay at the start of the tournament. Vera's opponent took the gold in doubles in Athens, and doubtless had a strong home court advantage.

The "live" scoreboard only posted the games won, not the points, so there was no way to get a sense of it from that. Because of the rain delay, I didn't stay up to watch it. It appears she had a slow start, but picked it up in the 2nd set, but too late. Don't lose heart, Vera! Keep it going.

Vera is on the entry list for the AIG Japan Open. This is the only warmup event available to her now before the Kremlin Cup. Good luck in Tokyo, Bepa!!

See the pictures of Vera at
2nd row, on the right, and in the bottom two rows.

Vera lost her come back match 6/3 7/5!! :(

Did anyone see any of the match on the scoreboard or anything?

I know it will take abit of time to get back into the swing of things but it doesnt stop you being disappointed!!

Well good luck Vera!! Lets hope for a nice start to her come back!! :)

Vera's match is 3rd up on Centre Court tomorrow, about 3pm local time. Beijing is 13 hours ahead of me (Central Daylight time), and I am 5 hours behind Greenwich, assuming GMT does not change. When we are not on "Daylight Saving Time", we are 6 hours behind Greenwich. Whether Guangzhou is the same time zone as Beijing, I have no idea.

Supposed to be live scoring here:

hey guys, it's been a long while since i've visited and posted in this forum!

it's saddening to know that Vera had a viral infection which greatly affected her ability to sustain high energy levels needed in a tennis match. no wonder she got frustrated most of the time.

but, it's good to know that Vera's back after some lay-off and is competing in this tournament as the first seed. i hope she shakes off the rust fast and progress deep into the tournament. winning it all is my real wish here but i have to be realistic given that it's her first tournament after her ankle injury.

goodluck Vera!

Finally, we needed some good news, didn't we?;)

Yeah, its an interesting draw!! Vera at the top of her game wouldnt have a problem with anyone in it, but coming back from a long injury lay off, will make a difference!! Kirilenko just won the China Open so she will be a threat!!

Though, at least its a weaker field so she can get back into action against some weaker opponents and not thrown straight in at the deep end!!

Its nice to have her back at last!! :)

Vera is now top seed at Guangzhou. Peng Shuai is #2 seed. Vera plays Li Ting in 1R, looking at Jidkova and Harkleroad after that, and Maria Kirilenko in the SF if the seeds hold. Domachowska is in the bottom half of the draw.

(you need to cut and paste to get both lines in the url)

GO BEPA!!! We're excited to see you back! :D

I just found this statement on Vera's official site, it seems to explain Vera's awful form this year!! If it is 100% correct, then Vera's form should pick up when she returns in the next couple of weeks!! It would certainly explain alot though!! Lets hope its sorted now!! :)

"It turns out that Vera has been suffering from a viral infection all year, although it was only discovered in August. She has been left feeling chronically fatigued, which explains why she has been struggling this year. Vera is now preparing for tournaments in the fall, and we wish her a healthy return to action."

Yeah Nick, that is a relief. She's got a bit to make up but she is good enough. Hope she has rested up well and by the time the China open comes around she is ready to make a serious climb back up the rankings

posted on 12-9-2005 at 06:20 AM
So Vera's only dropped 2 places to 20th in the rankings which is a relief!! I thought she might have dropped more than that!! Now its time to start moving back up!! We dont wanna fall out the top 20!! :(

Vera is on the entry list for the Guangzhou International Women's Open! She is the #2 seed, and Venus is the #1 seed. Here is the link:

This list shows last revision of 8/25/05. This is a Tier III that begins Sept. 26.

Good luck, Vera. I hope your recovery is complete, and that this tournament will help get you up to speed and back where you belong.
