Bank of the West Classic (Stanford)

========================
BANK OF THE WEST CLASSIC (Stanford, California, USA, WTA Tier II)
========================
First-round draw
----------------

Fanship-interest:
* VERA ZVONAR╦VA [5] v qualifier
* Daniela Hantuchovß v Alexandra Stevenson [WC]

If Bepa and Daniela both win, THEY'LL PLAY EACH OTHER IN THE SECOND ROUND!! But seeing as there's a conspiracy to keep them apart, I expect Daniela will find herself promoted to 9th seed and moved in the draw. ;)

Stevenson is just returning from an injury-layoff (September 2004 to July 2005), and has lost twice in first rounds on the ITF Women's Circuit, so I think I can safely say that her chances of beating Daniela are approximately zero (Daniela leads their head-to-heads 6-2).

Bepa has the tougher assignment against a qualifier - i.e. someone on a winning-streak of three matches. I hope the talented and sexy Sania Mirza will qualify, but she's the last one I want to see as Bepa's first opponent! (No doubt the anti-(Bepa v Daniela) conspirators will rig the draw to make it so.)

How about that?! Vera plays Meghann Shaughnessy in the 1st Round at Stanford!

Hey, Joseca! I'll see you at LaCosta. I'm working every day, I think. Usually, I'm at the SW or NE corner, though they like to move me around. When Vera's playing, I usually do NE or NW (or the outer courts, if she's there). :)

Vera's match is first up in Stadium Court at 11:00am Pacific Time. That will be 2:00pm New York time.

Vera is also playing doubles there with Elena L. Their first match is against Hantuchova/Sugiyama, tomorrow apparently.

GO BEPA!!

Unfortunately, Vera couldn't make it 3 in a row over Shaughnessy. She lost in the 3rd set tie-break, 3-6, 6-1, 6-7. I haven't seen any tie-break scores yet. No actual live scoring available there or anywhere that I can find. I did see they were at 4-4 in the 3rd, but no info until the final score.

Vera needs some encouragement, I'd say. If you want to say something, get it on my message thread by tomorrow evening.

Well that can only be seen as bad luck!! If you lose on a tie-break its just bad luck!! Vera desperately needs something to go her way!! its so difficult when so much is going against you, it seems like it will never end!! We just gotta sit and wait!! :(

6-3 1-6 7-6 (8/6)

Bepa led 3-2 with a break in the third set. But once again, with a match against Daniela in prospect if she won, she choked. :(

It's very hot in California apparently.

Here is a report on the match:
http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/news?slug=ap-stanford&prov=ap&type=lgns

and a quote from Vera:
"We both played well, but maybe she was a little bit lucky on the break points," Zvonareva said. "You play every week, you win, you lose, you go to the next tournament. I just want to be back in the top 10."

At least there's a positive note there.

C'mon BEPA!!!
(I'll help you in San Diego! :) )

Yeah, tough loss that one. She does seem to be staying positive from reading that article. That's a good sign.
Good luck next week Vera

Stanford: Andrew's mini-report

========================
BANK OF THE WEST CLASSIC
(Stanford, California, USA, hard, WTA Tier II)
========================
First round
-----------

- VERA ZVONAR╦VA [5] lt. Meghann Shaughnessy [Q], 6-3 1-6 7-6 (8/6)

Last week Bepa beat Shaughnessy 6-3 6-3 in the first round, but with the prospect of playing Daniela in the second round, she choked. :( Bepa led 3-2 with a break in the third, and even had a match-point at 6/5 in the tiebreak.

>>>
The 15th-ranked ZvonarŰva rallied from a 4/2 deficit in the tiebreaker, and eventually took a 6/5 edge by coming to the net. The ace put Shaughnessy up 7/6. Then ZvonarŰva hit into the net to end the two-and-a-half-hour match.

Apparently it's very hot in California, and that always seems to be bad for Bepa this year.

Bepa: "We both played well, but maybe she was a little bit lucky on the break-points. You play every week, you win, you lose, you go to the next tournament. I just want to be back in the top 10."

Shaughnessy: "I always say there's nothing worse than being sent home by the same player in two consecutive tournaments. I'm glad to win if for nothing else to protect my own sanity. I played three pretty good matches in qualifying, and that helped me. She fights hard and it's been a bit back and forth between us. I wanted to get through this one today. It was a heartbreaker for ZvonarŰva, we're both so close."
