Vera's left ankle (latest: message from Vera at Guangzhou)

Bepa has now pulled out of several tournaments with a left-ankle sprain, so rather than create a thread about her withdrawal from the US Open, I've decided to create one focusing on the injury itself and the ongoing withdrawals.

To recap, Bepa sprained her left ankle in the doubles at San Diego, and it sounded very bad according to Sam at http://www.zvonareva.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=185 : Bepa had to go to hospital and "is on crutches and has an air cast on her foot".

It seems that it hasn't healed in time for Bepa to play the US Open. The media that I read didn't even had the decency to post an article about Bepa's withdrawal, so the worst part was reading through the draw, wondering when I was going to find her name, and getting increasingly worried as I got nearer and nearer the bottom!

I'm very sorry to realise it's so serious as to prevent her from attempting to defend her first Grand Slam title (the US Open 2004 mixed doubles), but better that than risking her long-term future.

I wish Bepa a full recovery, and I also wish that when she does come back, she will forget that she was in a slump, and we will once again see the Bepa of whom John Lloyd said at the French Open 2003: "...to take that chance the way she did in the third and grab it, I mean that's the sign of a champion - a future champion - and she's got a very good mind - very good head on her shoulders".

Its the start of the US Open today and does anyone else feel down? I usually love the start to Grand Slams but today im left thinking, "who can i support for the 2 weeks to make it abit more interesting?" Im left with no answer, there really is no substitute for your favourite player so i feel these next 2 weeks are gonna be pretty dull!! :(

Vera,if your reading this, say hi to us guys! We'd really love to hear from you!

Yeah Nick. My thoughts exactly. Just doesn't feel right without Vera there. Hopefully she will be back on court soon to cheer us all up

There seems to be no news forthcoming on Vera's injury, prospects or prognosis. I'm told such an injury weakens the ankle and makes you more likely to suffer it again. I hope this does not turn out to be the case. We have seen a number of players sprain an ankle and fully recover with few or no repeats. Altho' her absence puts a big hole in the tournaments, as Andrew has said we hope Vera has a complete and full recovery. Nothing could be worse than returning too soon.

This US Open offers a great opportunity for the whole field: Kuznetsova out in the first round to a fairly new young Russian, Ekaterina Bychkova! Serena still looks out of shape. Kim is the major threat remaining and apparent favorite.

I have a few more Russians to cheer for in Vera's absence, along with some others (and I wouldn't mind seeing Kim win her first slam), but it's not quite the same without Vera in the running.

Get well soon, BEPA! And completely well!

It feels like something is missing, like an 'empty' tournament.
I cheer for Dementieva and Myskina now. And I hope we'll hear some positive Vera-news very soon.

Theres a somebody Im longing to see
I hope that she turns out to be
Someone wholl watch over me
Im a little lamb whos lost in the wood
I know I could always be good
If someone could just watch over me

Vera Zvonareva, quite possibly the biggest risk for people with a weak hart, but she's worth it!
