US Open
I think its time to forget about Cincinnati now and look forward to the US Open where Vera is gonna stand a big chance of getting some decent ranking
points since she was beaten in the 2nd round last year!! Theres a 300 point gap between her and Capriati and a 400 point gap between her and
Sharapova,it would be great for her to really close that up especially since she now has almost a 1000 point gap back to Serena!!
Vera,if your reading this, say hi to us guys! We'd really love to hear from you!
Vera Zvonareva, quite possibly the most beautiful girl in the world!!

Well, she has 80 points to defend at US Open. It is not a lot of points. Last 3-4 tournaments Vera has played her best tennis of this year and if she
can keep up that form, she can perform very well at the Open. She needs help with the draw in order to make some really good results. Let's hope
she doesn't get players like MoMo, Henin, Davenport on her path, because she clearly struggles against them. If Williamses will get a special
seeding, then she will be about 10-11 seed and that means potentially 1-8 players in the 4th round... Tough but Vera can certainly do it!!!

No, Vera can play Elena Dementieva in round of 16 and Mauresmo in quaters.
She is playing Naqyova in the first round. She played with her twice at 1-1, but Vera beat her 6-1, 6-0 at 2002 US Open in the second round...

I think the draw is rather ok for Vera. Dementieva is one of the best draws she could get for the 4th round and in the quarters at least itエs not
Henin-Hardenne.
I hope she can turn this rather good draw to account.

Howdy!
Dementieva this year has been "feast or famine". If she gets by Safina in the 1st round, she'll pose a tough challenge for Vera in
the round of 16. I have been a big Elena fan until this past Roger's Cup, where I "adopted" Vera instead. I was impressed with
Vera's practices, and very disappointed in Elena not showing up for 1st round. "I couldn't get focused?" Hmm....
Vera played Mauresmo tough in Montreal, and had chances to take the 1st set. If she BELIEVES she can win it, she will! There's no doubt in
my mind, and I think most of you believe it, too. SHE has to believe it, though!
Udachi, Vera!

That would be nice Gorki, but is that on Sporza or Canvas/Ketnet?
When Sporza finally stops, I will be able to watch sports on the Belgian channels again. Many Dutch people wanted to receive Sporza, but that
wasn't possible. Bloody shame!
Misschien had deze vraag ook wel in het Nederlands gekund, maar dat is zo lullig tegenover de andere leden....

Hi !
Well, I don't know exactly when "Sporza" will be "off"... I thought on September 1st, but I'm not quite sure...
Can you receive the RTBF ? Because "La Deux" will also broadcast the US Open.
Well, if I know something about all that, I will post it here! ;-)
You know, nearly half of Belgium (the frenchspeaking part of the country) couldn't receive "Sporza"... in its own country... Shame!

And my Dutch is about as good (or as bad...) as my English so... geen probleem!

Yep! Nice win!
Next match... against Els Callens, who beat Groenefeld 7/5 in the third!
To answer your question sachalandkroon: I saw an ad on Canvas, saying that "Sporza" will "continue" on "Canvas/Ketnet"
from September 4th...
This would mean that the game could be broadcasted on "Sporza" (and "La Deux" ...
But anyway, I hope they will play in 1st or second position... otherwise, it will be too late... (the broadcast stops around 23h...)

Thats certainly gonna be a busy 2 weeks for her but i think the doubles partnership with bob bryan is a great idea, she can learn alot from him as hes
one of the best around!!
On a different matter, did any of you guys see an article on Maria Sharapova that said that she didnt speak with the other Russian girls anymore?? It
had supposed comments from Myskina that said she didnt consider Sharapova to be Russian anymore since she had been in the US since she was 7 and
Dementieva was meant to have said shes deffinitely not Russian and she doubts whether Sharapova's ever been back to Russia since leaving!!
Sharapova was meant to be really upset by these comments and they apparently dont talk anymore!!

I watched the match live and Vera came through 6/3 6/3 in her 3rd round match with Els Callens,it was fairly convincing and Callens didnt really look
like ever winning the match let alone breaking Vera!! The one downer on Vera's side of things would have to be the fact she served 13 double
faults, the problems with her serve seemed to come back today and the usual problem with her head was all there to see again!! Infact,we made it as far
as the end of the first game before Vera was hitting her racquet against her leg in frustration!! She really needs to learn to control herself better
cause it doesnt help her at all!!

Vera won 6/3 6/3!
That's the nearly the only good thing about this match...
Luckey for her that Callens didin't play at her best, because I thought this wasn't a good match from Vera...
After two or three points, she was already hitting herself with her racquet and complaining about herself... Not the best way to start...
In the first set, there was such a strnage game. Vera was serving: good point (15-0), double fault (15-15), good first serve (30-15), double fault
(30-30), nice point (40-30), double fault (40-40), good serve (A), double fault (deuce)...
Vera played well on the important points (break points and so on), but otherwise, it was a poor performance. We expect much better from her.
One or two good points every game will not be enough against top players;
The statistics are clear about that: 53% of first serve, 13 double faults, 21 winners, 26 unforced errors
She even got a "warning" because she had too much "eye contact" with her coach...
Well, she'll have to play better in the next round!

I was talking to someone in another forum about vera and they said this rather bizarre statement which they think is true,do any of you guys know
about it cause it sounds complete rubbish to me!!
I don't know if it was written somewhere here, but do you know the real name of Vera is ZvonarOva, actually? It was one mistake in filling the
first foreign form and no one could mend it and off we go now Russions JO and JE are similar in cyrylic look that - there was the mistake

What a hell of night, yesterday!
I had to watch the first set on the text pages of the Belgian channels. Gorki, I don't really know what kind of channel "La Deux" is,
but I definitely can't receive it. But (yes , yes, yes) we had Eurosport. Thanks to Jelena Dementieva for winning very fast. That allowed
Eurosport to switch to the Grandstand for a part of the last set. But it didn't make me very happy at all. I think Vera did not play well (that
is kind of an understatement) but at least she won and that is great.
One other thing that made me angry was the commentator. He was continuously talking about the match between Nalbandian and van Scheppingen on court
11. He thought it would be more interesting for Dutch people to watch that game, but (hooray for the directors) they didn't switch to that game.
Nevertheless, he was talking about that match all the time and was not concentrated on Vera's match. The only things he said about her were
negative: no tactical talent, too much serve faults, etc. He called her "that Zvonareva" or "this Russian". The bastard!
And the people who were interested in van Scheppingen, could follow that match on RTL 5 (a commercial channel) so there was no reason at all for this
lousy-eurosport-man to talk about that match at all. In case you didn't noticed it: van Scheppingen lost. Of course!
I hope Vera plays a bit earlier tomorrow, cause these long evenings are a bit too stressy I think.
Wooooooow, what a terribly long story was that.

Nick_chicane, I believe there are some strange things with Cyrillic transcription.
Isn't it possible that in one language it is Zvonareva and in the other Zvonarova?
A few more examples of these strange spellings:
*the Dutch textpages speak about Vjatcheslav Jekimov (a cyclist) and the French say Ekimov.
*The Dutch papers write Maria Sjarapova
and the English Maria Sharapova.
*In Holland we say Sergei Gontchar (another cyclist) and in Italy they say Sergei Hontchar.
I heard Vera's father's name is Zvonarev, so why would she be called Zvonarova?
Interesting question, I'll look at my list of Russian transcription once again.

I watched Vera's match and I was a little bit disappointed 'cause Vera didn't play well but she won and for now it's
enough. She's gonna meet Zuluaga and that's surely tougher than playing vs. Callens ! However,I believe she will win that match ! Good luck
Vera... I'm really looking forward to Zvonareva-Dementieva . (Both girls have some problems in serving.)

Guys, this is more on the name issue i was talking about earlier, this is apparently what Vera said in an interview when asked about her surname!!
My real name is ZvonaROVA and in Russia I was called ZvonaROVA but it changed when I was 14 and I went for my first tournament aborad, to Croatia.
They needed to write it to some WTA documents and, by accident, they wrote ZvonaREVA. It's because in cyrylic alphabet JO and JE are very similar
signs. When I went to the USA it turned out, for Americans it's easiers to say Zvonareva and it's the end of the story.
Vera,if your reading this, say hi to us guys! We'd really love to hear from you!

I'm 100% percent with you mate.
I don't like that name at all. ZvonarOva?? what the hell is that?. It's too agressive a name for a tennis player. Tough It'd be good
for a Hockey or football player.
On the other side, Zvonareva sounds great. I like it a lot.
On a second though, it is not that I don't like it, maybe I'm not used to it.
Heck, what am I saying? Zvonareva Stays like that!!

Vera and Myskina have pulled out of the doubles tournament,im presuming its because of Myskina's shock loss in the singles today and hoping its
not cause of any sort of injury for Vera!!

Hi Sacha (and everyone else! )
"La Deux" is the second channel of the RTBF (Radio Television Belge Francophone)): it's the same than "Canvas" (kind of
"little sister" of VRT).
I didn't notice you live in Groningue: I thought you maybe lived near the belgian boarder, and then could receive RTBF and "La Deux"

About Vera's name: My father had that kind of problem. He travelled a lot when he was a kid, and an embassy put an "e" at the end of
his name...
Now, the spelling of his family name is not the same as her sister's and brother's
A few weeks ago, I think a Belgian player asked the WTA to change her name, which was wrong on the rankings and official statements. So, "Evelyne
Van Hyfte" became "Eveline Vanhyfte".
So, it must be possible for Vera to change that if she wants to...
BTW: about tennis player's names... is it "Paradorn Srichaphan", or "Srichaphan Paradorn" ?
_"Please, Polly, don't mention the war !"
_"I'm sorry, he's from Barcelona."'

The sound in questien is after the letter 'R' and in Russian sounds like the word 'her'. It is a speciqal letter in cyrilic. It
looks like 'E' with two dots on top. I don't know any direct translation for the family name in such case. But Russians often replace
this letter with 'E' as a shorthand. So in my opinion her current family name is almost correct.
