Cincinnati

Awful quiet here! But maybe it will change now. The main draw for Cincy is here:
http://www.cincytennis.com/en/pdf/2005/mds.pdf

Vera plays Megan Shaughnessy in the 1st round (Megan will be thinking 'revenge' for Memphis), and is looking at Morigami or a qualifier in the 2R. Based on the numbers, Vera should be good thru the semis, where she could run into Daniela. Schnyder or Jankovic seem likely finalists.

But first things first. Shaughnessy will probably be Vera's most difficult match until Friday or Saturday, so keep focused and keep cool, Vera! You can do it!

GO BEPA!!

Yeah, it has been quiet, theres been very little to talk about though!! It should pick up now!! :)

Your right, it is a tough draw but if you look theres also a chance of Groenefeld in th 3rd round so theres chance there for Vera to get revenge on her!! I think that should be classed as a tough match to if they were to play!!

Vera,if your reading this, say hi to us guys! We'd really love to hear from you!

Hi guys!

Agreed, Vera's 1R match is tough with "revenge" painted all over Megan's face. I hope that Vera will have a good start in Cincinatti.

Go Vera! :)

Finally she´s playing again! :)
A good draw, I hope she will have a good start into the tournament against Shaughnessy. You´re right, everyone. It will most likely be the hardest match on the way to the semis.

Vera will play her first round match against Shaughnessy today as the last match on center court. Good luck!
Btw. Peschke is already out.

Vera won her match against Meghann 6-3, 6-3. I was able to watch most of it thru the internet, tho' without sound. More on that below.

Vera seemed to have trouble getting first serves in during the first 3 games or so. But apparently she was cruising pretty well after that. It was hard to tell with no sound and no live scoring. There were a couple big rallies with both players moving all over the court, and Vera won both of those. Meghann had quite a few aces it seemed. The Yahoo scoreboard hadn't moved from 4-3 Vera, first set, for at least 4 games, so I called the tournament office to check the score. At that point it was 6-3, 2-1 Vera. She won the next game to make it 3-1. I lost track after that until the last game when the players shook hands at the net. After a minute, the score was posted on the Cincy site. Way to go, BEPA!!

From what I can tell, Eurosport is not televising this tournament. However, if you want to pay, you can watch it via the internet, 'tho you probably need a broadband connection. This is streaming video. On the Cincytennis site, on the right side is an icon for Zcam, below the "Contact Us" link. A subscription for the tournament is $36 NZD (New Zealand dollar; translates to about $25 US.). You need to give them your email, and credit card, and they will send you a password.

There are very few instructions, but if you go here
http://zcamtennis.com/member.html
you can login to view whatever matches are on (it is not interactive). They were having audio problems this evening; hopefully that will be fixed by tomorrow. I sent them an email suggesting that they should show the scoreboard. (esp. with no sound). You will need Java enabled to view it, or Windows Media Player with oggcodecs. They have a link to download it, but I haven't got the WMP working with it yet. With luck it will be working before Vera's next match.

A good win tonight, Vera. Akiko Morigami is next. (btw, Groenefeld lost to Mirza.)

GO BEPA!!

Glad to hear that she did well in her first match here. I hope she´ll be able to play like that against Morigami, so then she shouldn´t have problems there. Groenefeld out isn´t too bad for Vera!

Great to hear some news finally.
Sam tell me you didn't pay 25 dollars to be able to watch a soundless and scoreless match on the net....:o That would really make you Vera-fan of the year. When is this match against Morigami?

There’s a somebody I’m longing to see
I hope that she turns out to be
Someone who’ll watch over me
I’m a little lamb who’s lost in the wood
I know I could always be good
If someone could just watch over me

Vera Zvonareva, quite possibly the biggest risk for people with a weak hart, but she's worth it!

I have to second the nomination for Sam as Vera Fan of the Year. Watching a soundless match is a bit irritating but being able to finish the entire match without the score would really take a lot of patience. (bows to Sam).

Thanks for the match report Sam :D

Well, yes. Of course I didn't know beforehand that they had audio problems .

As for the scores, I was getting impatient, which is why I called the tournament office. But the main gamble was that she would win that match and more. So far so good there. Now if they get the audio working, I'll have something. btw, the price is now down to $20 US for the balance of the tournament.

I should add for anyone who is considering doing the same that the size of the video will depend on your video card and video memory. I had about a 4" screen using Java. I think I have the codecs installed now in WMP, and I hope I can get close to full screen video with that. I'll know tonight.

The match against Morigami is probably tomorrow (Thursday).

GO BEPA!!

Hate to be the bearer of bad tidings but Vera just lost 3/6 2/6.
Bad loss all things considered. She should not be losing matches like this.
Very frustrating

I really don't get it. Why does Vera keep on spiraling downwards? :( I had high hopes for her in this tournament. Sam or whoever saw the match, could you guys please share how Vera played.

Thanks. :)

She left another big chance to go deep into a tournament here.
Would be interesting to know what was going on.

:( Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to watch it tonight, so I have no insights or info as to what happened. I got to connect to it when she was at 3-6, 1-2, and again when Vera was down 1-5 in the 2nd set. I watched her get the break for 2-5, but a couple long balls off her racquet at 30-30 lost the match. She quickly left the court, but seemed composed.

I do know if Morigami is on, she puts up a good battle. All I've seen so far is this:
http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/news?slug=reu-cincinnati&prov=reuters&type=lgns

From the WTA site:
"I just tried to concentrate on my game and not think about who was on the other side of the net," said Morigami, who avenged a defeat in her only prior meeting with Zvonareva, a straight-sets loss in the second round at Montreal last year. "I played aggressive, because you have to play aggressive against Vera. If I would have played defensive against her, she would have killed me."

After making it all the way to the Top 10 in 2004, Zvonareva has struggled in 2005, losing prior to the quarterfinals in 10 of 14 events played, including here at Cincinnati, where last year she was a runner-up. Despite successfully defending her Memphis title and reaching her second consecutive semifinal at Rome, the 20-year-old Russian has notched five opening round losses this season, and has not won consecutive matches since May at Roland Garros, where she lost in the third round.

If nothing else, there's a photo here:
http://www.cincytennis.com/en/players/gallery/

Let's hope Vera regains her stride for Stanford next week, and that she'll be tuned up for San Diego!!

C'mon BEPA!!

===============================================
WESTERN & SOUTHERN FINANCIAL GROUP WOMEN'S OPEN
(Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, WTA Tier III)
===============================================

Bepa repeated her win over Meghann Shaughnessy in the Memphis final, but then suffered a disappointing loss to Akiko Morigami, as she failed yet again to get to grips with playing in very hot conditions (in other matches, players were taking heat-breaks between second and third sets).

So Bepa missed out on a quarter-final against the talented and sexy Sania Mirza, and - worse still from my perspective - a mouthwatering first-ever singles-match with Daniela Hantuchová in the semi-finals. :(

-----------
First round
-----------

+ VERA ZVONARËVA [2] d. Meghann Shaughnessy, 6-3 6-3

Bepa: "I played pretty good today. Meghann was serving well and I really had to fight for every point. Many of the games went to advantage, so I was real happy to get through this match and in straight sets."

------------
Second round
------------

- VERA ZVONARËVA [2] lt. Akiko Morigami, 6-3 6-2

I'm very disappointed about this loss, as I didn't expect Akiko to give Bepa much trouble. Akiko is a Selesian player (two hands both sides), but when I saw her play at Wimbledon 2003 and 2004, I must admit I was pretty bored by her lack of `oomph'. But it seems that Akiko has become a powerful Selesian - she outhit Bepa according to those who saw the match.

Akiko: "I just tried to concentrate on my game and not think about who was on the other side of the net. I played aggressive, because you have to against Vera. If I would have played defensive against her, she would have killed me. Maybe she lost her concentration a little bit."

Bepa: "She was serving well and attacking the ball. I don't think she did something I didn't expect. She played her game.

"I wasn't able to hold my serve a couple of times and didn't use a couple of opportunities in the first set. That kind of changed the match."

At least some cute photos of Bepa at Cincinnati have surfaced this week! :)
